Not being able to sleep the way you are supposed to have so many more disadvantages than many people would think. What’s CPAP?

CPAP stands for continuous positive airway pressure, and it’s a therapy method used by people who deal with sleep apnea, snoring, and other conditions that may limit your oxygen intake while sleeping which can affect not only your sleep but also your overall health.

These CPAP machines use air pressure in order to keep your airways open to avoid your lungs from collapsing during your sleep. Your body can react in many ways to counter the airways collapsing, but the prolonged problem with snoring and sleep apnea can become a bigger health risk down the road.

Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a sleeping disorder in which breathing stops and starts repeatedly, sometimes happening multiple times throughout your sleeping time. Sleep apnea can be a dangerous condition due to the fact that it momentarily shuts down your breathing when you are sleeping. While your body has a mechanism that will force you to wake up to avoid asphyxiation, there are many other problems that can branch from sleep apnea like:

Heart Problems — things like congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, irregular heartbeat, can be some of the heart problems caused by sleep apnea.

High Blood Pressure — disruptive sleep and the lack of natural oxygen flow can increase your blood pressure which has other health-related implications.

Diabetes — sleep apnea can make dealing with type two diabetes more difficult.

Fatigue — not being able to sleep well due to the constant interruptions of sleep apnea can make you feel fatigued.

Depression — like fatigue, not being able to sleep well can bring a myriad of mental problems like depression.

Asthma — sleep apnea can worsen your asthma symptoms and increase the risk of asthma complications.

There are many more complications that can branch from sleep apnea. Proper sleep is one of the most important functions that we require to help regulate and stabilize our bodies. The constant sleep interruption can not only cause health risks but is also very frustrating and defeating.

Snoring Img

Snoring

While snoring is not as problematic as sleep apnea can be, it’s still a condition that can cause many of the same problems. The problems like fatigue and depression can still be experienced with snoring due to its sleep-disrupting nature.

Snoring often manifests itself as a harsh or coarse sound coming from the nose and mouth due to the partial blockage of the airways. Other things like alcohol consumption, soft palate, and congestion can contribute to snoring.

Also, snoring can be very disruptive for those who sleep next to you, or in the case of having a loud snore, the people in your house. This problem can be the cause of unhappy partners.

Like we mentioned before, there are many complications that can result from sleep apnea and snoring. These problems have been proven to improve when our airways and oxygen levels are stabilized and we are able to get a full night’s rest without major interruptions.

When you use a CPAP machine, you are allowing your airways to stay open during sleep and you guarantee a constant flow of oxygen for your body to perform the functions it needs during your sleep. Additionally, being able to receive uninterrupted rest during your sleep can change the way you go about your day, often helping people deal with depression, fatigue, and other mental complications that come from a night of bad sleep.
